Bird watching is a wonderful thing, we get to see the descendants of dinosaurs flying about and occasionally pooping on our windshields! There is no 'one way' to be a birder. Some people prefer a leisurely walk in the woods, enjoying whatever birds and wildlife are around, while others will trek for miles in search of a single rarity. Some photographers would rather spend the day at a great feeding station trying to get the perfect shot. All of these methods are great, but if you are on a group tour with a few of each, someone will end up disgruntled.
